With the introduction of a new 5.0-liter V-8 for the 2011 Ford Mustang GT, Ford Racing Performance Parts decided it was time to update the product catalog. Beginning later this year, the 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 will be available as a crate engine.
The 5.0-liter V-8 crate engine will be snatched right off the assembly line, which means it will exactly match the 412 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque SAE rating given to the 2011 Mustang GT. Included with the engine are the drive-by-wire throttle body, manual transmission engine harness, and flywheel. Customers are responsible for obtaining their own vehicle harness, alternator, and powertrain control module, all of which can be purchased from Ford Racing Performance Parts.
For those who purchased a 2010 Mustang GT with the 4.6-liter V-8 but want to update to the new 5.0-liter without buying the whole car, this engine is for you. The engine and bell-housing mount patterns exactly mimic those of the 4.6-liter V-8. This makes the engine transplant a relatively simple affair. At 444 pounds, the new engine is also lighter than the old one that weighed 473 pounds.
Ford Racing Performance Parts expects to take delivery of the engines and begin to sell them on August 15. The MSRP is around $7000, but it may revised before the engine officially goes on sale.
In the ongoing sales battle between Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, it doesn't get any closer than this. Last month, Mustang prevailed in the contest over upstart Camaro -- by three cars.
The tally, says Autodata, was 7,489 for Mustang and 7,486 for Camaro. So far this year, it's hardly close. Camaro topped Mustang for the first seven months of the year, 53,864 to 47,524. But the new 2011 Mustang could be a game changer for the Blue Oval.
This is the pony car that gets more than 30 miles a gallon from its 300-plus V-6 engine. Ford thinks that's the first time that milestone has been achieved in a production car. And the V-8 is an absolute, blow-you-back-in-your-seat hoot.
The third car in the fight, the appropriately named Dodge Challenger, is way behind Mustang and Camaro. But there's plenty to cheer about. Challenger's total of 3,695 in July was up from only 886 in the same month last year, Edmunds.com points out.
This is no ordinary feud. Both GM and Ford PR execs have promoted the sales battle in a war of press releases. Will Camaro stage a comeback? Will the new Mustang eat up Camaro's smooth stretch of highway? This is going to be a month-by-month contest.
On Thursday night, July 29, 2010, the one-of-a-kind SR-71 Ford Mustang sold for $375,000 at the AirVenture show in OshKosh, Wisconsin. The car is a collaboration between Ford, Carroll Shelby, and Jack Roush. The S standing for "Shelby" and the R for "Roush". The auction benefited the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Young Eagles program. Ford Motor Company has been a supporter of EAA and Young Eagles for the past 15 years.
Jack Roush, who had planned on being in attendance, was recovering from last week's plane crash at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Roush crashed while trying to land his Hawker Beechcraft Premier jet at Wittman Air Field in OshKosh.

The researchers at J.D. Power and Associates have awarded the 2010 Ford Mustang highest ranking vehicle in its Midsize Sporty Car segment. News of the award followed the release of the company's 2010 Initial Quality Study Results. The 2010 Mustang received a Power Circle Rating of 5 (the highest available) in all categories: overall quality, overall mechanical quality, powertrain quality-mechanical, interior quality-mechanical, features & accessories quality-mechanical.
If you've purchased a new car recently, you've probably received a J.D. Power questionaire in the mail. The study is based on responses from more than 82,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2010 model-year cars, trucks, and sport utility vehicles. All were surveyed after 90 days of ownership.
Excluding luxury makes, Ford was the No. 1 brand in this year's study, which measured 228 potential problems during the first three months of ownership of 2010 model-year vehicles. Ford, including Volvo, had 12 models rank in the top three in their segments -- more than other automakers.
The Dodge Challenger came in 2nd place, followed by the Chevrolet Camaro, then the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Having spent quite a bit of time behind the wheel of the 2010 lineup, I think these results are pretty fitting. Ford created a winner in the new Mustang. See all the results here.
