DETROIT — The Roush 427R 2010 Ford Mustangs are poised for their TV debut on the series The Wannabes, according to a company statement released on Monday. But don't expect a thriller along the lines of the remake of Death Race, the only time a Roush product has appeared on film thus far.
The synopsis of The Wannabes explains that the sitcom follows "six teens who want to be pop stars even if it means dressing up like fruit and rocking out in a local café." The fruit costumes, the synopsis explains, help the teens "to promote the latest smoothie creations."
Roush insists it is "excited to break into television with
The Wannabes," in a company statement. "That is the type of program which is suitable for all members of the family and will have lasting appeal," said Joe Thompson, Roush Performance vice president and general manager, in a statement.
The sitcom will feature the Roush Ford Mustangs and "propane-powered vehicles," said the Dearborn tuner. The Roush Mustangs are said to play a "recurring role" in the sitcom, which is due out in April.
Roush had been poised to make its movie debut in
Run, an action film that was described as a postmodern version of the 1968 Steve McQueen thriller
Bullitt. But on Monday, Roush spokesman John Clark told
Inside Line that the "
Run movie never filmed," in response to an e-mailed query. "They haven't been able to finalize the financing among other things," Clark noted. He said the only movie product placement for Roush thus far has been "the remark of
Death Race in 2008.... They opened the hood on the car and had a Roush crate engine powering the car," Clark wrote.
IMDb describes the remake of
Death Race as a thriller that includes a car race in which inmates must brutalize and kill one another on the road to victory.
In stark contrast,
The Wannabes is a "tween" television series starring the Savvy, a pop group that has toured with Radio Disney.
